Shit or get off the pot

I realize I haven’t wrote anything since United raped our poor asses, 8-2. Well, there hasn’t been much to say since then. Really. It’s gone from very bad to very very bad. And so it goes.

Now, it only seems appropriate that my return to Arse505  comes right after we’ve lost to the most deluded team in North London. 2-1 and suddenly they are some sort of legends. Hilarious, really. Last I checked Arsenal have 13 titles to Spuds 2. So until THAT gap is closed.  Shhh…

Once again the Arsenal were ousted under the most regrettable of circumstance. Was Van de Vaart guilty of handling the ball? maybe. From the replays it really could have been a “scoop” chest of the ball with some left breast on it.  I don’t know. What I do know is that Ade created the pass that set it up. And I want to know why he, the lankiest of the Lank, even got the chance to make that pass. Complete selection disaster as I see it.

Basically, we’ve got players who train everyday in their particular position. Defense with defenders; Mids with mids; Strikers with strikers and so on. So, how does Song, a holding mid, start at Center Back? Many on Twitter were saying that he was our only option because all of our CBs were out injured. Many cited that Miquel was out, but then he played in the reserves. Today. Surely an additional day of rest was not the difference of being fit vs unfit.  So,  it has to be asked why Song, our starting defensive mid, would be moved back to play CB when there is a perfectly able-bodied CB in Miquel. WTF.

Most will cite the North London derby as reason enough to not play the youthful but talented. To me, that’s a bunch of chicken shit reasoning. If Wenger was scared to play Miquel cuz he was afraid of him fucking something up, in the utmost of occasions,  then it has to be asked why he is at the Club if he isn’t going to get a shot in such a contentious tie. These guys come to Arsenal because they know they will get a shot to play. They don’t believe they’ll play in the Reserves all of the time or go out on loan to second tier clubs. They believe in their own talents, and they want to fight for the first XI. It’s bullshit to think that a player like Miquel simply wouldn’t show up for such a big match. In fact, I would think he would step up and put in a shift to stake his claim at the top. That’s what I believe in.  For me, independent of age, if you play a certain position and we are short in that position, but you can play, then you get the start. That is super quality, is it not?

More rumor was about how Frimpong didn’t play and instead Coquelin got the start. Many a worry about his mind in such a hot headed affair. Again, what’s the point of having this bruiser if you can’t get stuck in versus your rivals? It has to be asked why he wouldn’t get a chance to play and put loads of pressure on Modric and go head-to-head with Parker. I know it would get heated but this is where he has to learn. Frimpong isn’t going to learn unless he straight up redeems himself for his earlier blunders. And he can’t do that if he is left out.

In recent times we’ve seen these calamitous selections come and go. It’s just that this time around Wenger did it versus our twat neighbors. It’s just as bad as 8-2 Away to United. And it’s so much worse for the Gooners who live in London.

For me there are some very obvious things to do. For one, I would have played Song in his natural position and had Miquel pair with Mertesacker. It’s not perfect, it’s not ideal, but both are actual CBs who have been playing in that position for X amount of years whilst Song does not play there regularly. I think Song got the CB nod because of his good performance vs Olympiacos and Wenger’s fear of a youngster shitting the bed and costing the Arsenal points. It’s reasonable, but for me, I’d rather deal with a CB fucking up then a guy who doesn’t play there being put at risk for the big fuck up. For me, that’s the obvious thing to do. Then you have Song in his natural position stopping the pass from the mids to the striker. If Song is holding the mid, who is to say he wouldn’t have crumpled Ade as he tried to pass to VdV? If you stop the pass there is no opportunity for even a shot, much less a goal. Duh.

Also, Oxlade-Chamberlain has had a stunning few matches and doesn’t even get a sniff at this match. Of course, it’s because of Wenger’s fear of him being too young, inexperienced, and in such a heated affair. Also maybe because he did play mid-week.  If you saw the match then you can honestly say that he couldn’t have fucked up any worse than Theo did. Ox is simply better with the ball at his feet, a natural winger. Theo is not a winger and yet continues to be picked for that position where he struggles every fucking match and the fans get on his back about how shit he is. Well, he’s terrible on the wing. In truth, if he continues to play on the wing his confidence will continue to dwindle and will be shattered when Ox gets the nod over him. Theo is a striker. And if he is not going to play striker at the Arsenal then he needs to be offloaded because right now he’s not helping. That is just a stingy fact.

And playing Gervinho on the wing has been as nightmarish as Arshavin. In Gervinho, we have a guy who is slightly more active with coming back to help the defense but fails to see any simple pass. And it’s not because of his forehead. It’s because he does the U11 head down dribble to no where and then tries to find teammates who have given up on moving into space because he has dribbled it all away. Gervinho has no idea where his teammates are, and right now, is no better than the other shit winger we have, Theo. I’d sit them both.

I would quickly get Ryo up to full fitness and throw him into the deep end. Time to step up, son. Welcome to life as a pro. You get paid to perform.  I’d utilize Ryo’s speed and the fact that his natural position is left wing and start him immediately. Likewise, I’d start Ox on the right wing. Two natural wingers playing fucking wing. Amazing concept. Fuck the age and experience issue. What we’ve seen is experienced “veterans” fucking up. So, really, more fuck ups from youthful but talented players cannot hurt us any worse.  At least we can get some valuable experience for these lads. At least. And there is a chance that it works out. And I really think it would.

I’ll only say that we should tinker with our formation. I don’t like the 433 cuz our team doesn’t work well enough, as a team, to defend and press. Until that happens this formation is a lost fucking cause. I’d prefer a traditional 442 with the 2 wings I mentioned paired with Song and Arteta through the middle. For now, Ramsey isn’t cutting it. And Wenger needs to decide if he is a Arteta-like or Song-like player, or neither. Pick one. It’s fairly obvious he is stuck in two minds.  Both Ramsey and Arteta were sitting very deep versus Spuds and so, not surprisingly, we had no link up to RVP. Sigh.

And, of course, Theo needs to play up top off of Robin. It’s amazing to think that Wenger won’t do this like he played Bergkamp with Henry. The technique of one paired with the speed of the other. It’s a no-brainer for me.

But alas, these are the issues I will highlight all season. Most notable is that Wenger isn’t going to change. I truly believe he won’t change his formation because he knows his legacy isn’t with the 442. Lady Alex has done it, and does it better than everyone in England. Even with an astonishing amount of luck.  Alex’s titles won’t be touched by Wenger. But Wenger knows that nobody in English football has won both domestically and in Europe in a 433. I believe that’s his goal. Wenger wants to win, at any cost, in the most attacking of formations.  I admire that. I love the vision. But he has to select the right players for it to work. And the ones he has at this Club, right now,  can’t play that formation. In order to save the season and truly challenge for any silverware he has to make some big changes, and take some risks on these super quality players he rates so highly. But he won’t. And what a fucking shame.

It’s gonna be a long season. I’ll hold out that maybe one day I’ll see my team picked and with these selections we will get a brilliant result. But until then it lives on in FIFA12. It’s all I got. And when the Arsenal play in this scheme, oh my, it’s a fucking beaut!

I don’t know what to name this blog entry

Nobody ever reads this so it seems as good a platform as any to do a drunken Arsenal-related rant.

The first one-line paragraph is achieved.

Arsenal will most definitely be in the match this weekend versus those dirty northern cunts. Did you notice that sweet Lady Alex deflected much of the attention off the match by talking about how the FA supposedly disrespect his team? That cheeky Scots. And the media bought it like the dump sheep they are. All of them writing some bullshit. Just to keep their job. You know it, too. They write juuuuuust enough, and with enough vigor to keep their fucking jobs. It’s about as transparent as transparent paper is. Right.

So, shut the fuck up! United have just as many deficiencies, if not more, that Arsenal has but the media is talking about the sacking of Wenger. I believe it’s 14 seasons with Champions League group stage play; something else like 9 seasons straight into the quarters? I dunno, Google it. But yeah, Wenger is holding his own as one of the elite, within his tidy budget.

Back to United. A complete decimated back four with 3 rooks and some Gea guy in goal. Evra is the only stalwart on the scene and he’s a cunt. How can a cunt lead other cunts? Let me count the ways.  I think Arsenal can slice these fools up. Arsenal only need to contain a quiet, Asian pie-eating crowd. Arsenal can easily lull them into a nice post-pie slumber. I’m not convinced that Smalling can contain a focused, fleet-footed Arshavin or a the debut of Ryo’s 18477537432 pedalada special. Completely convinced we will get something from the left-side of the pitch, the place where Nasri used to roam. I wouldn’t bet  against a lunging leg for penalty. For Arsenal.

Only worry is the midfield as we all know. I suppose this could be an opportunity for Lansbury. Basically, the opportunity. Away to United. What a task. But i think if he gets the start he’ll rise to the occasion. We saw him do it against the arch-Yidlies. I think he could do it again. And why not? really.

If Arsenal are gonna anything they gotta score and I’m not sure how Ramsey or Rosicky will carve the United D up. I suppose it’s gonna take “the” moment where they “click” for this to happen. They are top players, are they not? They are able to do this, right? I thought super-quality can do that? So, they better. And, as always, we want to see Arshavin in the roaming #10 spot but…

So, that’s where we’re at. Still in it cuz there are 108pts up for grabs. A draw is a good result but i’d prefer a win. And a message. We’re still around. You can call it a crisis, whatever you want. But we’re behind Wenger and the team that’s out there. Their mind is right, and that’s what we were missing in year’s past. With a bit of luck and some players making that leap, and doing it collectively. We’ll be a hard team to beat. I really believe that.

Mikey knows best

Hit it, Mikey: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eSl3X0brZU

Don’t worry Chunk isn’t dead. And, no, Cesc isn’t, either. But you wouldn’t know any different as we haven’t heard a peep in ages from our fearless Captain.

Just gonna say it: sell him. You’ve already rolled your eyes and thought to yourself, ‘this guy doesn’t know what he is saying’. Yes, you’re gonna go to Google and cite statistics over the last, well, 8 years. I get it. He’s good. Would Arsenal be better with Cesc in the side? Sure. In some cases. But will Arsenal win silverware with Cesc in the side? Well, the last 6 years is support enough of that not being a factor in bringing home silverware. The statistical citations fall apart when you break it down to the simple fact that Cesc has been ‘one of the top midfielders in the World’ but Arsenal have won noooooooooothing. ‘Oh, this guy should go support the Yids! The fucking wanker!’, you just recited in your Gooner-drenched brain matter. Nah, there’s only one team in London.

And now the Arsenal fan has had to endure the saga of Nasri not signing another long-term contract. Well, the same message goes to him. We haven’t won anything with Nasri in the side so what makes him think that he is so important to the team and irreplaceable? These guys. Their egos. Arsenal has such a good talent pool, scouts across the world, and some of these characters think they can hold the Club to ransom. Fools. Best of luck to Nasri, too. If he doesn’t want to sign, get some big money, and sell him. But, please, not to Citi.

So, instead of focusing on the want-aways, i’d prefer to comment on the rather-stays. If Cesc and Nasri want to re-up and come back to the team, that’s fine. I don’t need the commentary, show it on the pitch. If you’re in it, be in it to win it. Cliche, I know, but not to be confused with Clichy. He’s shit [now].

The pre-season has been inconsistent. That’s nothing new. Perhaps, just perhaps Arsenal are getting the inconsistencies out before the season instead of the second half. I prefer to think that’s the case. I dont’ really care much for the results whilst they were on travel to Asia. It was fucking hot and humid and their bodies had no time to adjust to the time difference and jet lag. Whatever.  And then Arsenal played in Germany, another stretching of the legs; lastly, had a run at the famed and illustrious Emirates Cup. We lost it? oh, man…guess the season is over. and, of course, to top it all off Arsenal lost the final pre-season match to Benfica. A poor pre-season? Hardly. It’s all about getting the legs back, bonding and playing with your teammates, ya know, getting your football hat back on.  Results don’t matter. I wish we had won them all because I don’t like to lose but we didn’t, I’m over it.

In the final match of the pre-season I found a lot to look forward to. The starting XI was quite good, very lively. Arsenal did well  against a very enthusiastic and lively Benfica. It did take a minute for some of the old and new to adjust to the pace of a competitive match. Eventually, Arsenal settled and began to string together passes in our very familiar Arsenal way. How nice was the Arsenal goal? It was incisive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBP_bJZEubY So, really, I’m not worried. The first XI had the ball on a string and did so against a high-pressure defense. And, let’s be honest,  England defenses are not that pressuring with their lumbering oafs in the back. But more importantly the players who did start looked to have improved.

Notable movement came from Arshavin, who as you know I am always getting on for his poor efforts; he moved, he moved off the ball and he looked focused. That’s new. Little meerkat was instrumental in setting Gibbs free from a Cesc-like position. Hell, Arshavin can play in that CAM role…if Wenger ever gives him a chance.

And then we had Rosicky, who actually got a pre-season in free of injury. Many don’t know, or don’t care to accept that Rosicky arrived in 2006 and has been injured since. Even when he finally had his freak injury diagnosed he missed pre-season for reoccurring compensation injury. Rosicky is THE example of Wenger’s ‘like a new signing’. I had struggled to figure out who should take over for Cesc when he departs. I named Ramsey as his successor. I did so prematurely. I think, if fit and in-form, Rosicky will lead from Center Attacking Mid. ‘This guy, my God, he’s fucking looney’ Yes, yes I am. But really, Rosicky has the experience, maturity, and technical quality and vision to take over from Cesc, his very good mate. It seems almost appropriate that the Phoenix of the squad be Rosicky. Dude has suffered. And all he wants to do is play football. That’s the type of player you want and need in a squad and we have him. I can’t name a better player to epitomize the rebirth of Arsenal. Unless you’re thinking of Vermaelen.

I am so stoked to have Verm back into the squad. My wife and I saw one of his early matches vs Wigan, ya know, the one where he scores and makes it look too easy. Yeah, that one. A sweet left-footed curler, top-corner. World Class. From a defender. And that’s what we’ve missed. You look at who we started at CB last year and it’s simply incredible that Arsenal even finished 4th. And even more amazing is that the mix-mash of CB pairings nearly won 4 different trophies, too. And, now we have Vermaelen back. I honestly believe he is the difference of winning a trophy or not. And it doesn’t matter if Cesc or Nasri are in the team. What matters, to me, is that Verm stays healthy. He’s got that very special leadership quality. The kind of leadership that is there whether or not he dawns the Captain band. Vermaelen has worn the band for Ajax, wears it for Belgium, but understands that it doesn’t matter if it’s on or not, what matters is that leadership, vocally or by example, is bigger than him. And he knows that he has to get the best out of the team. It’s that willingness to martyr himself for the sake of the team that is really going to be our biggest signing this summer.

And with Vermaelen’s presence in the back, a cheeky signing of Gervinho and the usual suspects returning I think Arsenal have another good nucleus. Every summer we hear about how we need a new holding mid and center back. Admittedly, I have my own wishlist but I’m not convinced that even big, calculated buys will yield trophies. And since I don’t have any control over them I won’t go into it. If we get a few new faces to add to the depth of the squad I’d be very appreciative as I think the squad is a bit thin. But hey, I don’t have any control over it. And never will.

So, Arsenal start the season with less optimism than in year’s past because we’ll likely lose Cesc and Nasri. That’s fine, let’s get over it. They don’t want to see out another trophyless season and that’s their choice. And that’s the fact. Arsenal may not win anything this year. For the last three years I have been completely convinced that this team would win the Premiership. So, this year, I’ll just support them. I won’t overanalyze it but support who is picked every week. If a player is shit and didn’t work hard enough during the match, I’ll have to say something about it. It would be wrong to pretend like everything is okay.  But what I won’t ever do is criticize effort. At least I know the player is trying and giving his all. That’s all I ask.

I just want to see high effort and a real commitment to the badge. I think this year we’ve got a few qualitative elements that you won’t read on Sky or hear on Fox Soccer Report. And the usual pundits won’t hint at it cuz they’re statistical know-it-alls. So, even without anymore signings, the loss of a few stars, and a feeling of pessimism I think Arsenal can still put up a fight. Mikey said it best.

Wanted: Crazy

It’s been awhile since I wrote a posting but that is mainly because  Silly Season has arrived and I need to separate myself from the madness. As usual, the rumors about Cesc leaving have kicked up. Add want-away players Denilson, Bendtner, and out-of-favor Clichy and Arsenal could have a very busy summer.

But will Arsenal really have a busy transfer season?

In first is some young kid from League One named Jenkinson. I mentioned him, that’s enough. He’ll deputize behind the regular defenders and will probably get a few run-outs throughout the season. As a defender it’s hard to see him breaking in as a starting regular this season, and probably the next. One for the future.

Rumors flying about a double-swoop for Gervinho and Hazard. I admit, I know absolutely nothing about Gervinho except that he is a striker who has scored some nice goals and also had some assists. I think of him as a mix between Vela and Eduardo. And we all know how that has worked out.  An immediate issue is this guy is from Ivory Coast and would miss the January period for African Cup of Nations. Another Kanu, another Toure. When will Wenger learn to just leave Africa alone? Good players but in the most competitive league in the world you need your players available for the whole season.

For many years fans have talked about attaining a holding mid. Of all the positions that must be addressed this summer it has to be this void in the middle. Song has improved but is not world class. Add Diaby in that position and you’re guaranteed an injury; Jack will play himself ragged, needs rotation; Denilson will be in Siberia; Ramsey may be too affected by his injury to really get stuck in on challenges. And let’s be honest, all mentioned above don’t have a bit of crazy in them. And that is what is needed most.

The truth is that Wenger should never have let Flamini’s contract dwindle down. Losing Flamini has hurt the team for many years and like so many in year’s past he has never been replaced. Flamini could not only tackle but also distribute the ball; he was an offensive threat, maybe not so much from scoring but from setting up players. Song is not that guy. And, more distinctly, Flamini is a nutter. Many a player were scythed and learned quickly that if they dribbled into the middle he was there waiting crazily and ready to tackle. Arsenal simply do not have that guy. Song’s demeanor is all too gentle and Jack has shown glimpses of madness but has not snapped…yet. Jack is on the cusp of getting frustrated and becoming a Scholes-like nut and I would prefer if he did not.  In order to really challenge for any major trophy haul Arsenal need some crazy.

So, who? Who is good enough and does not demand outrageous wages? There aren’t that many. Of course, Wenger looks to youth but in youth one lacks experience. And, once again, this team of youngsters showed their lack of experience and bottled the term. Arsenal need an older holding mid with some desperation, and that man is Felipe Melo.

Felipe Melo has had a wild ride at Juventus and most recently stated that he thinks the Club has been using him to prop up other transfer adventures. That must get old. Melo is now 27, nearly at his peak of 28 and I believe he would provide an immediate spark to the team. Imagine the guy getting a start with Jack…both of these two busy bodies blitzing the opposition. Plus, Arsenal would finally get their replacement for Gilberto, another Brazilian. I really do feel that Melo has learned to control his temper and outrageous tackles. I think the guy needs a challenge and with some guidance by Wenger could be our answer to our holding mid debacle. Let’s be honest, Song needs some competition for further improvement and he is not getting that from Denilson, Diaby, or Ramsey. Melo is a blend of decent wages, experience, and desire to win for Club and country. I know he wants to be a Brazil regular but he needs to exhibit control of his temper as well as perform in the best league in the world. Melo also needs this move.

In addition to Melo, Arsenal should consider some low-wage back-up such as Michael Bradley or Jermaine Jones. Both are full American internationals and could surely provide decent back-up for the inevitable loss of holding mid, Denilson. Not only would having a few Americans boost the Arsenal profile in the States but also allow the players to learn from Wenger, ultimately helping their national team influence. And both are better than Denilson. Again, better than Denilson.

At the end of the day, buying a holding mid and/or CB is always a pressing need that Wenger may or may not address. Fortunately, I don’t think he has a choice to ignore this buy this summer as next summer the Financial Fair Play rules go into effect and many won’t be able to break bank for top talent. I really do think Wenger will make some buys but the purchases of new talent are only a small piece to the bigger problems at the Arsenal.

For me, I’d go ahead and offload Cesc as he is not Captain material  nor does he want to be at Arsenal.  Surely Arsenal can fetch at least 40m for him. I would immediately appoint Vermaelen as Captain. I know most want Robin to be leading the squad but rarely does a striker make a good Captain; Vermaelen can command more from his position looking at the entire field instead of Robin with his back turned to the run of play. Plus, Vermaelen has captained his former Club Ajax and his country.

I would also release Almunia, Denilson, & Bendtner. All can be sold for decent transfer funds. These funds, plus Cesc’s transfer,  could potentially be used to buy Hazard, Gervinho, Melo, Sakho, Jones, or Bradley.  I would allow for Rosicky, Arshavin, & Eboue to stay and simply see their contracts dwindle down and then try to sell them off before they can leave for free. Either that route or just let them expire. I don’t think the fans would complain if they were sold straight-up, though.

So, my idea for what has to be done involves, well, a lot of crazy. And Arsenal need crazy to move Forward. It’s crazy to think about selling our “best player” Cesc, but it’s also crazy to keep a want-away Captain in place. It’s crazy to continue to think that Song is a top, world class player when he is not. Sure, he is much improved but not the top player a team like Arsenal require. And, ultimately, it’s crazy to rely on so many young players to perform without a leader or experience in the side. So, let’s get crazy! Wenger needs to make some very hard decisions about the future of the Club and needs to do this immediately. As supporters we lack any sort of influence on his decision so let’s hope he shows some creativity to lift the Arsenal out of this rut and deliver trophies season 2011-12. It’s completely mad to think Arsenal have gone this long without winning anything but this summer and subsequent season will tell us where this Club is headed. Forward.

Boom Chamakhalaka

It’s been awhile since I wrote. And mostly because the football we’ve seen for the last few months has been manic. One day the Arsenal play great football and then the next back to lifeless, spiritless dross. In this time I’ve had plenty to mull over. And, after reading @Arseblog today I wanted to defend one player and advocate for his return to the starting XI. And, yes, in replace of Arsenal golden boy, Robin Van Persie. Marouane Chamakh got the short end of the selection stick. And this is why…

Chamakh led the Arsenal team in a way that RVP could not. In August, Arsenal won two matches and drew one. That’s seven of nine possible points. All matches that Chamakh played in; mind you, Chamakh came on after thirty-four minutes vs Blackburn for a crocked RVP. Arsenal still won.

In September, Chamakh scored against Bolton, Braga, and Partizan. All wins. Now, Arsenal drew vs Sunderland, which was a mental match all together. Ya know that one where Cesc scored from waaaaaay out off a deflection and then was injured consequentially.  And then Arsenal lost to WBA, at home. Another strange fixture.  All in All, in matches Chamakh was involved in, Arsenal won three; drew one; lost one. Worth mention is that the Arsenal crushed Spurs in the Carling Cup. Cham wasn’t involved. Just a friendly reminder.

In October, Arsenal lost to Chelsea Away. Cham suffered in this match versus some very physical CBs. Chamakh then scored the winner vs Brum; scored again vs Braga; put in an impressive, high-effort shift vs Man Citi in another Away win. One could argue Bendtner stole the goal that was to be Chamakh’s, shortly after he was subbed out. Arsenal then stole a very, very late three points vs West Ham. Another full 90 for Chamakh. All in all, 4 wins when Cham played with one loss versus Chelsea. Arsenal also won vs Newcastle in a Carling Cup match, which Chamakh was rested for.

In November, the whispers of Robin’s return began to surface again. Arsenal lost to Shakhtar Away…a match Bendtner was favored to start over Chamakh. And then a home loss to Newcastle in league play. A match where Chamakh started but was replaced by RVP in the 57th minute. I can’t help but think losing Cham’s height hurt when Carroll scored the match-winner.  Chamakh returned in the next match with two Away goals vs Wolves; another full 90 in an emphatic Arsenal Away win to Everton; scored in Arsenal’s 2-3 collapse vs arch-rivals, Spurs. Again, Bendtner got the nod over Chamakh in an Away loss to Braga. Arsenal then won Away 4-2 vs Villa with Chamakh playing a full 90. Worth mention is that Cham got the third goal, essentially putting the game out of Villa’s reach. And something Arsenal has trouble doing. Again, Chamakh was rested in the last Carling Cup clash of the month Vs Wigan. In short, in matches that Bendtner got the start over Chamakh, Arsenal lost. And, even though the team collectively collapsed, Chamakh did score to put the Arsenal up 2-nil versus Spurs.  For the month, when Cham started Arsenal won three of five premiership matches. It wasn’t the best month for him but he can’t be blamed as he did put in very good shifts, even in the losses.

In December, Chamakh was dropped in favor of RVP. Chamakh started and played a full 90 as Arsenal beat Fulham. Arsenal won again vs Partizan, another match Chamakh started. Notably, Chamakh started next to RVP, who had just returned to fitness and played a full 90. A pairing of strikers I’d be happy to see more often.  Chamakh then played a full 90 vs United Away, and Arsenal lost to a very unfortunate and lucky flick by Park.  After that match, Chamakh was dropped. Arsenal then beat Chelsea 3-1 and Cham played a substitute role. And then Arsenal drew Away to Wigan, and Chamakh returned to the starting line-up because, inexplicably, RVP was rested.

And then come January till May Arsenal fans only saw Chamakh in a substitute role.

Many argue that if you have a fit RVP then you start him. I can agree…if Arsenal play in a 442 and Theo plays as the fast striker off of him. Arsenal’s left and right back spend so much time crossing to phantoms in the box that you have to have a heading specialist in the box. That is not Robin.

Yes, Robin has scored some very nice goals for the Arsenal but as Chamakh’s early form suggests, you don’t have to score to be on the winning side. Chamakh works twice as hard as Robin to defend from the striker’s position into the midfield. For the second half of the season I’ve watched RVP jog around and not really pressure the back four of defense; in contrast, Chamakh hounds them and has them cough up the ball. It’s worth mention that when Chamakh was starting and playing regularly, Nasri was producing far more and getting more opportunities to goal. Robin’s relaxed defense from the Striker’s position doesn’t create the opportunity for the midfield to win unsettled passes and then counter quickly. And, of course, Robin is not a natural central striker like Chamakh and/or Bendtner.

One could argue that the dynamic of the team changed when Wenger dropped Chamakh. Wenger probably cites Chamakh’s lack of scoring as reason enough to drop him. I tend to think we should have kept him playing until Arsenal stopped winning with him in the squad. But with Robin’s star power, it was never going to happen.

So, since Chamakh was dropped Arsenal won 13 matches in all competitions; lost 5; drew 9. The draws are most notable because even though Robin may have been scoring, Arsenal still won but drew oh so many. I tried to explain on Twitter that scoring goals means fucking nothing if you don’t win. And in many matches that Chamakh played but didn’t score, Arsenal won. It was a rarity that we drew when he started. There are so many variables as to why draws become wins and I like to think that the difference was Chamakh’s leadership from the front line. Cham works so very hard for the shirt, always pressuing the back four into mistakes. And this helps the midfield win errant passes and disrupt an imbalanced midfield and back line. Narsi flourished off of this disruption and quick, incisive Arsenal counter-attacks. This happens all cuz of one Gooner’s effort. An effort I’d like to see from Robin because, well, he’s the golden boy and gets the nod weekly. It’s just a shame, to me, as a footballing fan to see that our manager would drop a player, not so much cuz of a dip of form but because of favoritism and star power. I just wonder what would have happened if we had seen Chamakh more often from the start. Maybe alongside Robin with Theo whipping crosses to him. We’re unlikely to ever know, too. Wenger will continue the 433 and Cham will be left to erode on the bench or until Robin inevitably gets injured again. It’s a damn shame. And, again, it comes down to selection and formation. And it’s Wenger’s fault.

And that’s the best part

I had to re-read my last entry. I had to get back into the blog with a bit of a feel for the pace I was writing at. The form, if you will.  Like me, Arsenal have a few players who will be playing at the Camp Nou for the first time.  This could go many different ways.  I’ve visited and toured this monstrosity and the walls seem to go up forever. Literally, forever. And ever. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be surrounded by all those fans. It’s no wonder so many want to play in front of that sea of people, weekly. And then the illusion wears off and you’re like, “holy fuck, look at all these cunts”. And then you retire. To the MLS.

I’m happy to hear we’ve got Robin back in some sort of predictable charade of Wenger-sly. I mean, really, I think we saw that coming. I remember @yankeegunner doing the math and saying he wouldn’t have played another 25min if he was going to be out for 6-8 weeks. And he we right.

If Robin is fit, you start him. You have to. If Cesc and RVP get into a rhythm early it could lead to that early goal we really, really need to get. Add some sly of Bendtner and Chamakh for set pieces…we’ve got a great shot of getting one early. A really strong, offensive start is completely needed.

I think defensively we’re fine. Kos and Szczczczc are well over their little mixup. And, really, who gives a fuck about the Carling Cup? Yeah, yeah a bit of silverware but everyone knows the duck is fucked when you win the FA Cup, or League. And, again, it’s all about the league title. The rest is tinsel. It’s shiny, but artificial. Forget it, we’ve over our trophy slump when we win the league. 38 games of consistency is the top prize.

Anyway, we’re right in there. We have a very good shot. Even if Barca score first. Just gotta tie to get out of there…and we can do that, and better.

I talked some shit on Twitter about not being another douche that does a preview of the big match. I douched it. I don’t think it was avoidable.

I hope Cesc has a great match and Arsenal win convincingly. Something to say there is some cosmic justice that teams can’t just tap-up talent and try to coax them back to their evil lair. I’d like for Cesc to realize the best team is the team he is currently on. Maybe tomorrow’s the day.

I know we don’t have Song tomorrow but it might be a blessing in disguise.  Of the guys on the ball, you gotta pick Diaby, if there’s any debate to be had. Kid is silky smooth. Just lacks the final ball. I think he can get a bit of that tuned in if he gets some games. Even though he was lazily-average, he may need a kick start to his season and could raise his game to the occasion. Would be great to see him work well with Jack and Cesc.

Just got some tweets today about how the Spanish teams never lose with this ref we’ve got. Some swedish guy or something. It’s not a big deal to me cuz I just expect refs to be shit.  I gave up on them being just along time ago. And the theatrics made by the players..!It’s just ridiculous. So, I won’t be surprised if one of the cunts makes a leap into the box or cries to get a free kick. Yada yada…just saying it’s usually a factor in these types of games.

So, I think we’ll probably get an early goal and maybe play defense for a long, long time. We could concede. But we may have to grind out a draw. Got the away goal, no shame in that. It’s gonna really depend on that first burst. Who draws blood first? Who makes the first move? Who shows the commitment to set the pace with a strong goal? I think Arsenal will press the game. Maybe out of naivety or genius, but I think it’s the right way to play these guys. Gonna be fun.

So, yeah, douched out preview of the game. I’m happy we’re only short one or two key players instead of six, seven, eight that we missed  last year. And. We did score. So, cheers to that. We’ll get that Away goal and then it’s up from there, I really can’t say how it will go. And that’s the best part.

One to Enjoy

Tasty event for tomorrow, eh. This is why we watch football. The two best teams who play at breakneck pace and really try to keep the ball on the ground and get everyone involved. And as much as I like the play going forward I also enjoy the defense just as much. Barca is great at winning the ball back immediately after they have lost it. You have to appreciate the willingness to work, both sides of the pitch.

What I don’t really like about Barca is their constant bitching. It looks as if they feel they are untouchable; they say whatever they want in the press, and fall over even for the faintest of touches.  That’s not beautiful football, that’s a perversion. I expect to see many variations of deceit.

For me, I think the teams are evenly matched. The victor will be the one who converts the possession to goal.  Naturally. This time around I think Arsenal will attack Barca, and not let the Catalanalopes dictate play. Last year Arsenal let them do whatever they want and in doing this they were lulled into their possessional mastery, and lost the tie. Consistent pressure on the ball, and just as importantly, off the ball, could prove decisive.

I think the most interesting battle is Clichy vs Messi and Theo vs Maxwell. You’ve got a little left-footed guy battling against a solid, and experienced left back; on the other end you’ve got lightning pace against a guy with very soft hair. If Theo can get Maxwell to doubt himself early, and often then I think Arsenal can open up their back 4, get people out of position and shifted.  On opposite, if Clichy can try to shade Messi to use his right foot then I say it’s a job well done.  Just stop the ball; stop it from going forward. I fear Clichy stabbing at the ball as Messi cuts left. Yeah, you can kinda see that in your head, too, huh. And I worry it will be a penalty. So, really, I’ve got my Clichy worries and dependence on Theo to compensate this frailty.

The rest of the match is up to the one-to-one match-ups. It’s pretty even with talent on both sides.  It’s exciting. I don’t want to say much more than I have cuz I could pick this one apart for hours. Instead, I’m just gonna sit back and enjoy the football because, really, this doesn’t come around very often. It’s football in its highest regard, the way the game should be played. Minus the Diving Team from Catalonia.

Bye Bye Birdie. Is that Pie on your face?

4-4.  Today is the day Arsenal lost the title. Talent aside, many are too weak in mind to finish as Champions. It’s terribly frustrating but there is no finer example than today to confirm it.

Diaby’s sending off goes down as the one of the most stupid things i’ve seen in a very long time. Diaby’s own-goal finish Away to United can also be argued to have put us back in the title race a year ago. Now, he’s done it again. I know he is young but these juvenile mistakes add up and we now have to seriously think about the positives he brings in compared to the negative mistakes he causes.  Right now, and closely after the final whistle, I don’t want to see him or hear from him. The idea makes me sick.   Fortunately, we won’t see him for 3 games.  He’s right on the cusp of joining Denilson in the bin.

I don’t want to talk about Dowd too much cuz it’s futile. We know he is shit. The only thing I want to say is he gave away two soft penalties, and even with those two the score is 4-2. The rest is on the Arsenal for goosing the match away. I wish there was some sort of way Arsenal could open an investigation into these refs because, paranoid or not, some of these decisions are suspect of bungs and favoritism. Not a whinge, just stating the very obvious.  Oh, and by now, the Arsenal players should very well know that it is usually 12 vs 11 and that they are going to get hacked. To be shocked every week that calls don’t go their way and that they are getting kicked reeks of ignorance, or maybe just youthful naivety.  Either way, get used to it and get on with it.

So, even with Dowd’s terrible officiating the Arsenal could have gone on to win 4-2.  The rest is on Cesc. Not once did I see him do the universal “calm down”, press-your-hands-to-the-ground motion. Not once, after any of the concessions did I see him get really angry and demand that the team relax and hold on to the ball. In fact, after the first goal it seemed like Arsenal just played right into the Magpies manic style of run, run, run and jack it around. We fell for it. Can’t help but think if Cesc had opened his mouth and really laid into the team, not individuals, they would have been shook up enough.  But he won’t cuz he is mates with everyone. Cesc, really, the Captain has to lead and part of that is not being liked like a best friend who comes over to drink beer and play FIFA.  But worse off is that even after the 1st goal went in; another followed, and then another, and THEN another. After each goal I never saw him talk to the team, as a whole. A huddle after the second is worth a booking.  And Cesc aside, the remaining 9 players should have known to do two things: hold possession of the ball, and prepare to get kicked. Even if they put themselves in that position Dowd would have had to blow his whistle; time would have been wasted; Newcastle would not be able to score or even create chances if they didn’t have the ball. Again, this goes back to Cesc and his inability to relay this very simple command to the team.  Instead, all 10 just ran around, manic-style and played right into the ‘pies game plan and roaring influence of the crowd.

I’ll go ahead and say it: the sooner Cesc leaves the sooner Wenger gets to choose a leader, a true Captain. His name is Vermaelen, and when fit he needs to take the reigns. I just have the feeling that 2pts would not have been dropped if he was on the pitch. Vermaelen has both Club and International experience in this capacity and would have brought the calming presence needed to secure victory.

So, really, there was a lot of ridiculous moments that contributed to the collapse. Diaby; no leadership; Dowd calamity; Djorou injury all could have been manageable individually but not all as one conglomerate of shit.

We’re gonna concede the title not because of ability but because of immaturity and stupidity. These two psychological factors are killer and the only remedy is time and experience. I know we are all sick of waiting for glory but this is the cost of youth development. It’s not always pretty, but it’s part of the playing football the right way.  It’s the Arsenal way and it has to be.

You don’t know what you’re doing…past 60min

Good evening, Gooners. I expect that you watched some shiteh football today. And it was just that, shitty.

We all knew that Shiteh was going to sit back and defend. Evidence enough was the midfield wall they threw at us, sporting Barry, Da Jong and Yaya. But what we didn’t know is that they’d leave the Emirates with a precious point, which has to be a great result for them and another missed opportunity for the Arsenal.

The blinding truth is that the Arsenal team did nothing of major wrong.  In fact, the team dominated large parts of the match, hit the post three times [counting Theo's offside ping] and looked the better, or at least the team looking for the 3 pts. Unfortunately, it wasn’t good enough. I feel terrible for the team because they deserved the Win but were held back.

Today the team held the back line very well, which is a shame that we didn’t get a goal to reward them with a clean sheet. If we had got one, I think it could have been two, three, even four after that. I spend a lot of time yelling at some players to get their shit together ie Song, Clichy and today they looked the part. I just hate that they didn’t get the Win to go with that lovely clean sheet.

Most of Twitter is mad at Shiteh for their defense. Well, cry all you want but it’s a good tactic to go to a top rival, defend, and leave with a point. A note Arsene should try when we play at United.  He continues to go for it, knowing that calls won’t go our way and we continue to leave without anything. Anyway, the fact of the matter is that we lost 2 major points at home and it’s down to Wenger’s lack of tactical implementation.

Bendntner on for Jack, to go on the wing.

Are you fucking kidding me?

Is Bendnter to beat Richards with his blinding pace? with his deft moves?

Oh, no, there is more. Wenger took off Theo, who was crazy-legged again and put on that lazy guy. Theo was the only player getting the back four stretched. And Wenger took him off. Admittedly, I had hoped Arshavin would give it a good go for 20minutes but he looked off. Maybe it was cuz he came in on the right? Yeah, that’s what i’m going with.

And then the third sub that should have been and never came was Chamakh for Robin. As much as I love Robin, and want him to do well, he was gassed by the 65th minute. Robin wasn’t carving or even separating the Shiteh CBs so what we needed was some direct play. And it never came. This part of the match pisses me off because Chamakh at least gives the Arsenal a target man and some aerial threat on set pieces [in the air] and on corners.  And he works his fucking ass off! And, really, what you want late in a match versus tired legs and mind is some freshness. Chamakh is a Gooner and works tremendously hard; some will argue he is tired, but surely he can go full boar for 25min, right? Chamakh could have made the last 25 minutes very hard for the Shiteh defense but instead of a sub coming Wenger held on to it. I guess he wants to use this sub later…maybe some sort of credit i am unaware of?

So, at the end of the day, 2pts dropped because of Wenger’s tactical ineptitude. Wenger took our width away [sub of Theo for Lazy; Bendtner out on the wing] and never replaced Robin.  I believe if he had kept theo on, maybe taken off Jack but put on Vela then we could have kept our width play. Even Arshavin wide would have been okay.  Add Chamakh in there and we’d have a fresh, three-pronged attack.  Instead, he left a sub in the wake and didn’t go for it, didn’t make that final sub that might change the game. The handbrake as he calls it.

It’s very simple what Wenger could have done. The pitch has to be stretched in order to create space. By putting on pacey, winger-types it makes the right and left back challenge farther and farther away from their compact back four; if beat, that makes a CB have to commit and there is a ripple effect across the line that creates space for a fast, creative team to exploit. If you throw in an overlapping run it makes the defenders make a choice, or at the very worst, make a decision to stay on the ball or follow a running, overlapping player. Either way, the time taken [even a split second] can create indecision for the defender or simply leave an opening for the offense due to the movement made off the ball.  And at this very high level of play it almost always means a goal will happen.

So, really, it’s very much on Wenger’s failure to adapt and tactically implement a plan to split open the million pound wall. One mustn’t look much further than a Bendtner on a wing to confirm his ineptitude. For quite some time we all thought it was down to the players, that we didn’t have the depth to pick from. But the reality is that, now with a fully fit squad, Wenger is being exposed and his tactical decisions are to be questioned. It’s a real shame cuz I admire Wenger so much but eve he has to be called out when he’s in the wrong.

And the Sagna sending off is just stupid. Another reason the Title won’t come home. It’s just idiocy to get sent off in the final minute; waste time; ultimately, be lost for 3 matches. These continued instances of folly add up over the year and create a distance you can’t quite make up. Fortunately, Sagna misses some Cup ties that he may have been rested for anyway. Lucky boy.

So, there you have it. Arsenal has the talent, and recently the desire and work to get it done. What they are now lacking is for Wenger to join up with them and make sound, reasonable decisions late in the match. Until then, it’s on him. The team is ready.

arsenal v utd: twitter breakdown

I was going to write a blog about lots of different things cuz, well, arsenal give me so much to write about from so many different footballing angles. but that takes too much time. upon reading my tweets i think it is all there.  i was really angry for obvious reasons: playing a bunch of cheating cunts; lazy, ill-timed arshavin touches; a very good post-match analysis of where we should go now. I think wenger has to change the formation; if he doesn’t then we don’t get a title now, or ever. not with this batch. byte away…

Team is either tired or lazy
Los
ok, it’s time for me to suit up – gonna go with 89 yellow, son
Los
give a few of them 15minutes, then make 2 subs – trial for song, rosicky, jack starts now
Los
it could be worse, we could have almunia in goal and silvestre protecting him
Los
at the end of the day, #arsenal need to dictate play and that starts in their head. shake the nerves or we lose. period.
Los

Los

Los
